Bonus point win

ABERAVON QUINS 30 PENCOED 22
Heavy conditions underfoot made this match a struggle between the packs with occasional bright play from the backs. Pencoed started very brightly and took an early lead through a penalty goal which was soon followed by a good forward drive for a converted try. The Quins were guilty of poor discipline early on that kept them on the back foot. A strong lecture from the ref seemed to put them on the right track and the forwards superbly led by Callum Beynon with strong ball carriers Dylan MacLachlan and Jake Price slowly gained the upper hand. The Quins scrum was dominant and props Nathan Robins and Dan Helson out scrummaged their opponents and also contributed greatly in open play. Some good forwards work set up a Quins attack and smart passing from Rhys Edmunds, Callum Handford and Kieran Brennan put lock Jack Davies in possession along the touchline and showed incredible speed to beat three would be tacklers to score a memorable try which was converted from a wide angle by Scott Roberts to level the scores.
Things looked well for the Quins as the pack gained complete control of Quins and the improved discipline was pointing to a convincing win. Pencoed had other ideas however and an interception of a Quins attack restored their lead with a converted try. For the third time in this season Pencoed’s lack of front row cover resulted in passive scrums taking away a huge advantage from the Quins. The home pack were in almost complete control and Tyler Hopkins was an ever present around the ball in attack and defence his line out throwing was very good in the wet conditions and continually found Beynon and Davies. A Beynon take set up a rolling maul and Davies dived over for a try improved by Roberts. In a copycat move minutes later MacLachlan scored and repeated the dose before the end to secure a bonus point victory.  The Quins pack is developing into a powerful unit with teenagers Jack Davies and Morgan Hibbard showing great potential and are two great signings who are melding well with the more established players.
