5th Straight Win for The Mighty Quins

ABERAVON QUINS 28 MAESTEG CELTIC 13

The Quins ensured their place in the last 24 of the national plate draw with a victory that was a lot  closer than the score suggests. Scott Roberts opened the Quins account with a penalty which was  soon equalled by Celtic fly half Matthew Harris. An early injury to prop Dan Morgan upset the Quins  front row and Matt Washbourne replaced him with Dylan MacLachlan moving to hooker. No 8 Matt  Saker set up some good attacks as did MacLachlan. Loose head Mike Burgess continued his recent  rich vein of form and shone in defence and attack. Scrum half Owen Kennerley scorched the turf for  50 metres before being hauled down inches short. Good work by the Quins eight with Jack Davies  well to the fore and the excellent skipper Dale Bowen gave strong running centre Callum Handford a  try converted by Roberts. This reverse stung Celtic to up their game and the Quins were called upon  to defend desperately

The second half started with all out attack from Celtic who were making things uncomfortable for  the home side, Full back Roberts was a tower of strength under the high ball and was well assisted  by wingers Jack Witts and Rhys Edmunds. Continual pressure from the Celtic forwards set up a  chance for wing Arron Williams who dived in for a deserved score. Another concerted effort from  the visitors resulted in a score as they mauled their way over to take the lead 13-10 although it was  clear to some that the ball was grounded well short of the line. Kennerley was injured and Edmunds  took the scrum half spot. Out of position in the centre Kieran Brennan still proved a danger to Celtic  and put in some good bursts. Roberts levelled the scores with a penalty. The Quins were looking  vulnerable but Witts raised hopes with a good run.

The turning point came when Callum Beynon  kicked a penalty goal from a metre inside his own half which visibly stirred his team into action. Dale  Bowen, Jack Davies and Saker ploughed through would be tacklers and the wrecking ball MacLachlan  smashed his way through the tiring Celts. Good work in the closing minutes by Roberts and Handford  gained forward support and once again Bowen produced a scoring pass for Danny Helson to cross  for a try with Roberts capping a superb performance with a touchline conversion . Injuries enabled  Brennan to take up residence in his normal wing position and when put in possession near his own  22 produced a remarkable weaving run along the touchline to score a memorable try underlining his  value to the Quins.

All though through to the next stages of the competition The Quins will entertain Pencoed in the  final group game on Saturday 16th October

Also in the district cup Semi-Final [from last year] Quins will meet Skewen at Tonmawr 2.30pm
