Aberavon Quins 50 Cwmgors 3

The Quins returned to the top of division 2 West Central with a convincing win over a game but out gunned Cwmgors XV. The Quins pack were in complete control from the start with the dominant front row trio of Mike Burgess, Luke Davies and Dan Morgan just too good for their counterparts.

Although they held the upper hand in the opening quarter, the Quins frittered away several chances before Marc Sheppard kicked a penalty goal to put his team on the scoreboard. Marcus David playing unusually on the wing ran with skill and strength to set up several attacks and an inter-passing run with Jack Dacey was stopped inches short. Assured full back Ryan Pugh instigated the first try dashing from defence and combining with David for strong running centre Niall Price to touch down. Sheppard converted. The Quins scrum continued to dominate and Callum Beynon and Dale Bowen were in commanding form in the line out. Price and David combined in a defence splitting move and although held up short Dan Morgan crashed over for Sheppard to convert making it seventeen nil at half time.

Hooker Luke Davies put in some typical barnstorming runs scattering would-be tacklers to all points. Another Quins attack was held up at the corner flag but Sheppard floated a long kick across to the opposite corner and Marcus David gathered and sidestepped over for an unconverted try. Steff Rees took advantage of a rare visit to Quins territory with a penalty goal but a great forward surge from a Beynon won line out saw Cox, Burgess and Morgan take play to the line and flanker Adam Dawe crowned an all action display with a try converted by Sheppard. The forward pressure exerted by the Quins eight resulted in changes to the Cwmgors scrum resulted in passive scrums which negated the huge dominance of the Quins. The Cwmgors backs revelled in the supply of ball hitherto denied them and the Quins showed that they could defend as well as they could attack and were pegged deep in their twenty two for a long period. The Quins raised the siege through full back Pugh and when the support let the ball loose close to the Cwmgors line Jake Flynn calmly chipped the rolling ball into the waiting arms of Sheppard to make a remarkable score which he converted.

Cwmgors never gave up and always tried to break down the Quins defence but a heavy tackle by James Peploe-Williams put Flynn in possession and the diminutive scrum half scored after a dazzling forty meter sprint leaving would be tacklers clutching at fresh air. Sheppard converted and also improved the last try scored by Foard Cooksley after Ryan Pugh and Marcus David combined impressively.
