Farewell Shep
Tonight sees the final appearance in Quins colours of a playing legend. Quieter than the salad bar in Minehead Butlins during a James Mallen weekend, this gentleman will leave a hole in the Quins ranks bigger than the hole in front of the stand. And, just like that one, it’s unlikely ever to be filled. Excluding friendlies or second team games (if he ever lowered himself to appear in either), Marc Sheppard has represented the club 234 times in cup and league appearances before tonight and scored a colossal 2,036 points including 48 tries, 385 conversions, 325 penalties and 48 dropped goals in the process. It is fair to say that in most of these games, he was the difference between winning and losing. They say that the only pain in rugby is regret. If this is indeed the case, Marc Sheppard should have none. He has played with distinction and honour and we will all be much, much poorer without him. If the saddest words in the English language are ‘Aberavon Quins Nil’, the next saddest must be ‘Marc Sheppard retires’. Farewell Shep, you will be badly missed.
