4 in a row for the Quins

Aberavon Quins 22 Heol-y-Cyw 10

Although struggling early on to deal with the monsoon like conditions the Quins deserved the victory mainly through their pack, two pieces of individual brilliance by fly half Lewis Cronin and a very high quality bench.

Heol y Cyw quickly settled into the game and the Quins back three of wingers Brennan and Witts with full back Roberts were subjected to a barrage of towering kicks from fly half Jacob Lloyd but they handled the situation well. The Quins front row trio of Burgess, Hopkins and Robbins were in great form and soon commanded a grip on the scrums which was never relinquished. The tearaway trio also covered acres of ground in defence and attack. It was the boot of Lloyd that dictated the early exchanges and he put the visitors ahead with a penalty goal which was soon equalled by Scott Roberts. A period of indiscipline from the Quins gained a good attacking position for Cyw and Ioane Pascoe dived in for a deserved try converted by Lloyd.

An early injury to influential No.8 O’Callaghan brought Dylan MacLachlan on as a replacement and he immediately made his presence felt with straight running underlining the fact that he does not have a side-step in his armoury, as would be tacklers were spreadeagled about the field. Although leading it was clear that the Cyw pack effort was rapidly waning under the non-stop Quins pressure. A 30 Metre dash from back rower Matt Saker set up an attack with great support from the pack and a strong dash from Cronin resulted in a memorable try.

Just two points adrift at the start of the second half it was clear that the home pack held the whip hand as skipper Bowen led with some strong bursts ably backed up by the abrasive front row trio. Centres Handford and Dacey had a few attacking runs but the conditions made it a day for the forwards. Totally out scrummed the visitors stuck gamely to their task. Cronin then took advantage of another powerful forward drive to scamper through the tiring opposition for his second spectacular try. Roberts converted. The Quins were well in control and the young forwards Jack Davies and James Lewis showed their value with non-stop action. The vistors’ problems were compounded as in the final quarter replacements Robbie Morgan. A great day for the Quins forwards and Saker and Robbins deserved the rousing ovation they received when replaced.

The Quins are now certain to progress to the knockout stages as we are level on points with Heol y Cyw with two home games to play and even if we have no points from the outstanding games we will go forward by virtue of two wins over Cyw .
