Terrence Jones Shield Match Report

The Terrence Jones Memorial Shield

Aberavon Quins 31 Aberavon Green Stars 21

In the second meeting between the teams in seven days the Quins run out deserved winners.

Good work by No8 Liam Oates and hooker Tyler Hopkins forced a penalty and Ryan Pugh obliged putting the Quins 3-0 up.

The Stars swung into action and some strong runs from Larkworthy tested the Quins defence and Aaron Lewis soon levelled with a penalty.

Good work by the Quins pack put Pugh in possession close on half way and he showed great speed and skill to waltz through the Stars defence to score a spectacular try, which he converted to establish a 10-3 lead.

The Stars made good use of the breeze with some good out of hand kicking especially from fly half Sean Curran. The Quins defence appeared watertight until Curran placed a perfectly judged kick to the corner and Conor Condon gathered in style to touch down in the corner. Lewis could not convert but later placed a penalty to put his team in front.11-10.

Centre, Quade Boal made a good break that should have produced a score for the Quins but it was the Stars forwards produced the next score after excellent kicking by Curran and Lewis. A great maul from a line out thundered over the home line for a try converted by Lewis. The Quins pack hit back strongly and after several mauls collapsing near the Stars line the ref had little option but to award a penalty try.

The Quins started the second half with the wind at their backs just one point adrift and it was noticeable that the Stars pack was fading. Lewis however hit a penalty to make it 21-17 to the Stars but with Brett Thomas, Craig Cox and Richard Diaz coming off the bench things were looking grim for the Stars. However a dislocated shoulder suffered by Ryan Pugh disrupted the Quins effort. Jake Flynn filled in at centre and winger Rory Hinchcliffe moved to fly half.

A period of pressure resulted in a smartly taken try by Kieran Brennan for the Quins converted from the touchline by Hinchcliffe with his first ever attempt at goal in his Quins career. Things levelled out in the last quarter when passive scrums were called. The Quins victory was sealed when flanker Dylan MacLachlan dived over in the corner and Hinchcliffe again converted splendidly.  Steve Jones presented the Shield on behalf of his brothers to the Quins who have never suffered a defeat in the series of matches.
