Quins v Glamorgan County

Aberavon Quins 15 Glamorgan County 31

This match was to celebrate the 125 years of rugby for the Quins and also the Glamorgan Rugby Union.

The County fielded a strong fifteen with players drawn from the higher divisions.

The County pack gave the outweighed Quins eight a hard time in scrums during the first half but it was the Quins who took the game to the county through strong running centres, Niall Price and James Peploe-Williams. Kyle Williams defended well on the wing and made progress when in possession. An eye catching performance from scrum half Marcus David sparked off a few Quins attacks and skipper Craig Cox and prop Dan Morgan carried the ball well. the Quins took an early lead through a Marc Sheppard penalty but the lead was short lived as powerful props Lewis of Kenfig Hill and Priday of Gilfach Goch turned the screw and some good running from TATA No.8 Llewellyn set up a try for Tondu fly half Paul Smithson, which he converted.

Callum Beynon shone in the line out and stole a few opposition throws to give the Quins backs good ball to run.

Two quick scores came from good interplay as TATA Centre Nick Hopson and Llantwit Major's winger Josh Austin crossed tries, one of which Smithson improved.

A scrum five resulted in a score for Llewellyn to stretch the County's lead

The Quins pack raised their game Liam Oates and Lloyd Hayden were well to the fore with support from Cox and Tom Morley put the county under pressure. Niall Price crowned a great display with a try converted by Sheppard.

Starting the second half 24-10 down both sides rang the changes and the home scrum became steadier as the teams appeared more evenly matched. Quins defence tightened with solid contributions from Jack Dacey and Sheppard whilst attacking at every opportunity. Jordan Crealock put in a great run and replacement flanker, Adam Dawe entered the battle with his usual exuberance, seemingly tackling everything that moved. Several great lineout takes and accurate touch finders from Sheppard resulted in a strong maul and Sheppard dived over for a well deserved try.

Although they threw everything at the county it was Glamorgan who sealed a well earned win with a late try by Lewis Tutt of Maesteg Quins, Smithson converted
