Aberavon Quins v Cwmllynfell

Aberavon Quins 18 Cwmllynfell 9Defences ruled the roost in this battle between first placed Quins and their fourth placed visitors. With the strong breeze at their backs the heavyweight Cwmllynfell pack made things very difficult for the home eight and took two against the head in the opening minutes.Good running from winger Steve Colarusso raised Quins hopes but most of the first quarter was a defensive one for the league leaders. Hard tackling centres Gareth Pugh and Niall Price with tireless flanker Adam Dawe thwarted any attempts be the visitingbacks to break through but could do nothing to stop them taking the lead with througha Sam Evans penalty goal.Gareth Pugh put in a typical hard run and the home forwards drove forward through Craig Cox and Luke Davies.Hooker Davies was in superb form throughout and top class support from props Dan Morgan and Mike Burgess slowly turned the tide for the Quins.Callum Beynon and Dale Bowen have developed into a formidable second row partnership and Beynon in particular commanded the line out.In many occasions in his career fly half Marc Sheppard has stepped up to the mark forthe Quins through place kicking and touch finding and he stamped his authority on this game through tough tackling and hard running. He levelled the scores through a penalty just before half time. With the wind at their backs the Quins gained a measure of control and Sheppard and Ryan Pugh kept their team on the front foot with a good display of kicking.Scrum half Jake Flynn was well watched by the visitors but although he had little chance to break the stranglehold  still supplied a stream of hard flat passes and was unlucky not to find Jordan Crealock with a long effort that might have produced a try. It was the Quins eight that slowly wore down the more portly of the opposition eight and Cox, Burgess and Dawe drove repeatedly forward and Luke Davies was driven over the line but could not convince the ref that he had scored. Sheppard gave his team the lead with a penalty and Sam Evans replied in kind from the restart. No 8 Conor O'Callaghan showed good skills combining with Flynn to probe the blind side but it was down to Sheppard to establish six point lead with two penalties and was unlucky with his only miss that struck an upright and Cwmllynfell were fortunate to scramble the ball away safelyEvans took advantage of a rare visit to Quins territory with his third penalty but two late efforts from Sheppard ensured victory and took his season total past the 200 point mark and left Cwmllynfell empty handed
