Another great performance

HEOL Y CYW 20 ABERAVON QUINS 38 The Quins came away from Heol y Cyw with a well deserved bonus point win by means of an impressive team effort augmented with some stand-out individual performances.                       Injuries and unavailability forced the Quins into a few changes mostly positional. Centre, Lewis Cronin filled in as fly-half, Full back Callum Handford filled in as centre and winger Scott Roberts was at full-back.  The Quins played the first half into the stiff breeze and attacked from the off. Some strong running from MacLachlan and Hopkins caused problems for the home defence. An early line out take by Jack Davies enabled the Quins eight to set up an unstoppable maul forcing Nathan Robins over the line in his first senior start. Cronin converted. Heol y Cyw hit back well but did not take full advantage of the wind and all their attacks foundered in the face of the well organised Quins defence. The Quins back row of Saker, MacLachlan and O’Callaghan were immense in defence and also contributed strong runs. Jacob Lloyd narrowed the lead with two well struck penalty goals from close to half way. Skipper Dale Bowen then got on the scoreboard with close range try after good recycling work Scott Roberts converted and Cronin put the Quins further ahead with a penalty goal. On the stroke of half time a rare home attack was foiled near the Quins line but a poor relieving kick was scooped up by right winger Griffiths who strode over the line for a try converted by Lloyd.                                                                                                                                                         Starting the second half 17-13 up and the wind at their backs Quins supporters were confident of success but a rash of penalties gave the home side an attacking line out and mauled their way over for a try converted by Lloyd and the Quins were 17-20 down.  The Quins bench played a big part in second half as Ryan Pugh, Matt Washbourne, Dan Morgan, James Lewis and Jake Price joined the fray. The Quins scrum was on top allowing scrum half Flynn to combine with No.8 O’Callaghan to set up several attacks. Both Ryan Pugh and Jack Dacey split the home defence wide open could not find a scoring pass. Keiran Brennan combined with Tyler Hopkins to set up an attack finished by O’Callaghan converted by Pugh. The home pack visibly tired in the last quarter as MacLachlan continually battered his way forward ably supported by Matt Saker, Josh Pugh and Bowen. New signing Scott Roberts then finished an attacking wave in style with a try improved by Pugh and in the closing minutes O’Callaghan added his second try converted by Pugh. Quins coaches must have been impressed with the newcomers, Jack Davies, Nathan Robbins, James Lewis and Scott Roberts who slotted in well with the more established players.
