Maesteg 13 Aberavon Quins 5

The Quins started brightly and soon achieved dominance up front. A good break by Ryan Pugh split the home defence but a scoring pass could not be found. Strong running from Robbie Morgan and Mike Burgess made ground but a way through the stubborn defenders was denied. Winger Marcus David fielded a wayward kick deep in Quins territory and support from Nathan Flynn and the strong running Pugh carved through and david finished the move had started with a corner try. The Quins pack , with Oates and Mclachlan well to the fore were in good form but apart from sporadic runs from Condon and Rowlands the backs did not function well. The game became gradually a stop start affair with errors from both sides Just before half time a rare visit to Quins territory brought a penalty goal for McGulkin to cut the visitors’ lead,

The second half was ruined as a competition when Maesteg called for uncontested scrums due to their inability to provide front row cover. The removal of their more cumbersome forwards in exchange for lighter men proved a deciding factor in the Maesteg win.  McGulkin controlled  things well and wriggled his way over for a try which he converted and added a late penalty to deny the Quins a losing bonus point.

The powers that be must look into the uncontested scrum rule and find a more satisfying way to settle things for too often a scrum advantage is turned against strong scrummagers.
