Deplorable Conditions Hinder Game

Nantymoel 15  Aberavon Quins 15

In deplorable conditions the Referee Mr Richard Thomas allowed the game to proceed after both captains agreed.

With a very strong wind and driving rain at their backs the Quins swarmed to the attack but surprisingly it was Nantymoel who took an early lead.

A Quins attack faltered close to the Nanty line and a succession of fly hacks and slipping and sliding defenders resulted in a try for Andrew Thomas which was amazingly converted into the teeth of the gale by Shaun Webber.

The Quins pack dominated the set scrums and Bowen and Beynon took advantage of the accurate line out throwing of Luke Davies.

Tactically the Quins were guilty of over confidence by spurning kickable penalty shots for touch finders that yielded nothing in the face of stern Nantymoel defence.

Towards the end of the half  Marc Sheppard got the Quins on the scoreboard with a penalty goal. The Quins eight were driving the home pack backwards at a rate of knots but their advantage was negated when  questionable injuries to front rowers resulted in the remainder of the game played with passive scrums.

The second half bordered on the farcical with the Quins main weapon of scrum power  taken out of the equation.

A second try for the home side which was almost a carbon copy of the first stretched the Nantymoel lead and a Webber penalty made it 15-3.

Some strong driving play from the Quins eight took play into home territory and a smart break by scrum half Jake Flynn put Sheppard on a try scoring dash to the corner.

With the Quins hammering the home line which normally would have resulted in scores but for the senseless rugby league type scrums. Any Nantymoel scrum resulted in a sixty metre stroll up field making the Quins fight their way back against the wind yard by yard.

Flynn again found the key to open the home defence with well timed pass to centre Dean Scully on an unstoppable angle to cross under the posts. Sheppard converted to make the honours even.

For the third time this season the Quins were unfairly tested by coaches who use the safety card to try and get a result that their team scarcely deserve.
