Aberavon Quins 10 Bonymaen 17

Despite a great start the Quins failure to handle the windy conditions cost them the game. The opening quarter belonged to the Quins with good kicking from fly half Cooksley and centre Sheppard continually turning the Bonymaen defence. Great driving play from the Quins eight with locks Beynon & Bowen well to he fore. Some strong runs from full back Ryan Pugh tested the visitor’s defence and sustained attacks rewarded the Quins with a five-metre scrum.  A tremendous drive drove the Bony eight back and Cox showed great control at No.8 to score Sheppard converted.

The Quins front row of Morley, Helson & Morgan dominated the scrums in the first half and kept their team on the front foot.

Bonymaen hit back at the restart and flanker Kelly put in some good runs. Fly half Lawrence Thomas controlled things well for the visitors as his pack settled down and he soon slotted a penalty. Poor kicking from the Quins supplied the Bonymaen backs with counter attacking chances but the home defence was up to the task. Wingers Condon and Cronin raised home cheers with some spectacular runs but a feature throughout the game was the defence of both sides. The Quins scrum dominance continued but the Bonymaen forwards produced some spectacular mauling technique. Constant forward pressure gained a lineout close to the Quins line and Bony were awarded a penalty try. A disagreement resulted in two yellow cards brandished at the Quins and one for Bonymaen which was soon followed by a second for Bony producing a thirteen a side game for ten minutes.

A penalty chance for Sheppard hit a post and rebounded into play but there was no follow up runners to take an advantage for the home side. Just on half time Ryan Pugh levelled the scores with a well-struck penalty goal.

Facing the wind in the second half the Quins forward effort waned and were trapped for long periods in their 22. Cox, Oates and Mac Lachlan grafted hard and some great tackles from Ryan & Gareth Pugh kept the visitors at bay. Cox was a tower of strength and constantly nullified the visitor’s line out work.  The Quins tired in the final quarter and constant pressure on the home line produced a try for Kim Kelly converted by Thomas. It was not all defending for the Quins with O’Callaghan and Condon raising hopes. Beynon charged down a Bonymaen kick and the lock just lost the thirty-metre dash for the touchdown by inches. Bony returned to the attack but the Quins defence stood firm to gain a losing bonus point.
